Position Objectives

McDowell County Department of Social Services is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Community Social Services Technician to join our Child Protective Services (CPS) unit. This role plays a vital part in supporting children and families by providing direct services, supervising family visitation, transporting children, and assisting social workers in ensuring the safety and well-being of children.
Duties & Responsibilities

Supervise and monitor family visitations to ensure child safety.

Transport children and families as needed for appointments, visits, and court-related matters.

Provide support to CPS social workers in case documentation, family engagement, and follow-up services.

Assist in facilitating services and referrals for children and families involved in CPS.

Maintain accurate records, logs, and reports in compliance with agency policies and state requirements.

Work Schedule & Flexibility:

Standard agency hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

This position requires availability to work outside of normal operating hours in order to accommodate family visits and child needs that may occur during evenings or weekends.

Flex scheduling is available to balance after-hours work.

Desirable Training and Experience
​
-
High school diploma or GED required; additional coursework in human services or social work preferred.

Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
-
Ability to work with children and families experiencing crisis or trauma.
-
Must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license and reliable transportation.
-
Experience in child care, social services, or related human services work is highly desirable.
