Position Objectives

 

​The Program and Outreach Librarian is responsible for developing, managing, and evaluating
library programs and outreach services aimed at connecting the library with the community. This
position ensures the successful coordination and delivery of programs for all age groups and
oversees outreach initiatives, including bookmobile services. The Program and Outreach
Librarian supervises a team responsible for children's, teen, adult, and senior programming, and
plays a key role in tracking program data and communicating effectively with staff, patrons, and
community partners. The goal is to provide community-centered, inclusive, and engaging
programming that reflects the needs of the library's community.


Duties & Responsibilities

● Program Development and Management
○ Plan, develop, and oversee library programs for children, teens, adults, and
seniors, ensuring they meet the interests and needs of the community.
○ Manage and coordinate outreach efforts, including bookmobile services and
offsite programming.
○ Collaborate with program staff to create engaging, innovative, and community-
centered programming.
○ Ensure all programs are inclusive and accessible, with a focus on reaching
underserved populations.
● Staff Supervision and Support
○ Supervise a team of program staff responsible for children’s, teen, adult, senior
programming, and the bookmobile.
○ Provide leadership, training, and ongoing support to ensure staff are equipped to
deliver high-quality programs.
○ Conduct regular performance evaluations and promote professional development
opportunities for the team.

● Logistics and Coordination
○ Oversee the scheduling and logistics of programs, including room reservations,
event setups, and collaboration with other departments (e.g., Marketing,
Facilities).
○ Manage the bookmobile schedule and ensure outreach services are effectively
delivered to the community.
○ Work with program staff to ensure all events run smoothly, with appropriate
setup, equipment, and staffing.
● Data Tracking and Evaluation
○ Track program attendance, participation rates, and other key metrics to assess
program success.
○ Analyze data to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and use insights to make
improvements.
○ Prepare reports on program outcomes, community impact, and future planning
needs for internal and external stakeholders.

● Community-Centered Programming
○ Engage with community members and partners to ensure programs align with
the evolving needs of the library’s patrons.
○ Develop outreach strategies that foster community relationships and encourage
diverse participation in library services.
○ Partner with schools, local organizations, and businesses to expand the library’s
reach and impact in the community.
● Communication and Collaboration
○ Serve as a liaison between the program staff and other library departments to
ensure smooth coordination of resources and activities.
○ Communicate effectively with community partners and organizations to promote
library services and collaborate on joint initiatives.
○ Provide clear, ongoing communication with patrons to gather feedback and
promote programs.

● Budget and Resource Management
○ Assist in managing program budgets, including tracking expenses and identifying
cost-saving opportunities.
○ Pursue grant opportunities and external funding sources to support library
programs and outreach efforts.
○ Maintain and manage program supplies and ensure that resources are available
for staff and program needs.

● Project Management and Organization:

○ Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple programs and
outreach initiatives simultaneously.
○ Experience in coordinating large-scale programs, events, and ongoing services.
● Leadership and Team Collaboration:
○ Proven leadership experience with the ability to supervise, motivate, and support
a team of staff members.
○ Ability to work collaboratively with other library departments and external partners
to achieve shared goals.

● Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
○ Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage with
a diverse population of patrons, staff, and community members.
○ Ability to develop strong relationships with community partners and foster a spirit
of collaboration.
● Data Analysis and Evaluation:
○ Experience in tracking and evaluating program performance, with the ability to
use data to inform decision-making and program improvements.

● Community Engagement and Outreach:
○ A passion for community engagement, with experience in developing and
delivering programs that reflect the needs and interests of the community.
○ Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and create inclusive,
accessible programming.
● Technology Proficiency:
○ Familiarity with event management software, data tracking tools, and integrated
library systems.
○ Ability to train staff and patrons in the use of technology and relevant software for
program participation.

Minimum Requirements

​Preferred Experience

● Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS), Library and Information Science (MLIS), or a
related field.
● Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in program management, outreach, or community
engagement, preferably in a library or nonprofit setting.
● Previous supervisory experience in a public or community service environment.
● Experience with budget management and securing external funding or grants.

Working Conditions:
● Availability to work evenings and weekends as needed to support programming and
outreach services.

● Physical requirements include lifting materials (up to 25 lbs.), setting up program spaces,
and occasional driving for outreach services.
● Local travel may be required for community events, partnerships, and bookmobile
services.
