Job Overview
Under general guidance from the Circulation Manager, the Resource Sharing Coordinator is
responsible for assisting the library’s Circulation Department and Cataloging Department for the
McDowell County Public Library. In addition, the Resource Sharing Coordinator will assist the
Circulation Manager with year-round training for staff and orientation for newly hired team
members, ensuring staff are confident, supported, and well-prepared to serve the public.
The Resource Sharing Coordinator performs clerical and circulation duties in accordance with
established policies, with major responsibilities including management of resource sharing
among NC Cardinal Libraries, patron assistance, professional development, management of
serials, and item processing. This position is non-exempt under the guidelines of the Fair Labor
Standards Act.
Duties & Responsibilities

● Management of NC Cardinal Resource Sharing
○ Fulfills requests from other NC Cardinal Libraries.
○ Resolves routine problems in resource sharing procedures.
● Training & Staff Development
○ Assists the Circulation Manager with developing and delivering year-round
training opportunities for staff.
○ Helps facilitate orientation and onboarding of newly hired staff members.
○ Supports staff with ongoing skill development and refresher training.
● Circulation
○ Computer check-in and check-out of books and other materials.
○ Answers telephone promptly while on desk duty.
○ Empties book drops daily as assigned.
○ Performs library opening and closing procedures when needed.
○ Reserves books as requested by patrons and contacts patrons when books are
available.
○ Prepares library cards for patrons following library procedures.
○ Is familiar with complaint procedures; documents and handles initial problems;
refers these to the Circulation Manager and Library Director if necessary.
○ Shelves materials and reads shelves for accuracy as assigned.
○ Performs other tasks as assigned.
● Patron Assistance
○ Greets patrons pleasantly, in person or on the telephone. -
○ Provides reader’s advisory services for patrons.
○ Provides instruction on the use of the computer catalog.
○ Assists patrons using the Internet, copier, and fax.
● Courier Service
○ Collects library books from schools and individuals participating in library
outreach.
● Cataloging Assistance
○ Assists in book processing.
○ Performs basic copy cataloging.
○ Processes daily newspapers and periodicals.
● Outreach Services & Bookmobile Support
○ Assists the Outreach Services Coordinator with bookmobile stops and outreach
visits.
○ Helps load and organize materials, provides circulation and reader’s advisory
services, and assists patrons in locating materials or placing holds.
○ Serves as backup during schedule changes or staff absences.
● Continuing Education
○ Attends staff meetings and training sessions as required.
○ Attends area, regional, and statewide workshops on request.
○ Keeps current with NC Cardinal and resource sharing services.
Qualifications
● Strong written and oral communication and customer relations skills.
● Familiarity with library procedures and materials.
● Ability to deal tactfully with the public and with co-workers.
● Ability to work independently.
● Ability to bend, stoop, lift book bags, push loaded book carts.
● Computer knowledge and skills, including Internet and word processing.
● Comfortable working in various environments (indoor and outdoor bookmobile stops).
● Valid driver’s license preferred for backup bookmobile duties.
