Position Objectives

 

​The Recreation Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and overall functionality of McDowell County’s recreational facilities and grounds. This includes supervising a team of maintenance staff, ensuring facilities are safe and clean, and coordinating various maintenance tasks related to sports fields, parks, trails, and other public recreational spaces.

This is a supervisory position. This position reports to the Director of Parks and Recreation.

​


Duties & Responsibilities

​

  • Supervise and lead a team of maintenance workers in the upkeep of parks, sports fields, playgrounds, trails, and other recreational areas.

  • Conduct regular inspections of recreational facilities to ensure they are in safe working order and meet local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Plan and prioritize maintenance and repair projects, including landscaping, painting, equipment maintenance, and facility cleaning.

  • Ensure all recreational areas are properly prepared for scheduled activities and events.

  • Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies and equipment, ensuring all are in good working condition.

  • Collaborate with the Recreation Director to develop and manage maintenance budgets and schedules.

  • Coordinate with external contractors for specialized work when needed.

  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and protocols in all maintenance operations.

  • Provide training and development opportunities for maintenance staff to enhance skills and improve performance.

  • Respond to emergency maintenance needs and resolve issues promptly to minimize disruptions to recreational programs.

  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and repairs.

Minimum Requirements

​​

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework or certification in park management, landscaping, or facility maintenance is preferred.

  • Previous experience in facilities maintenance or groundskeeping, with at least 2-3 years in a supervisory or lead role.

  • Knowledge of safety practices, tools, and equipment used in ground maintenance.

  • Ability to operate maintenance machinery such as mowers, trimmers, power tools, and trucks.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.

  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.

  • Basic knowledge of budget management and record-keeping.
