Objectives
Under general guidance from the Library Director and direct supervision of the Old Fort Branch Manager, the Branch and Program Services position performs a wide variety of clerical and circulation duties, as well as provides programming and outreach on behalf of the Old Fort Library. Responsibilities include patron assistance, with considerable emphasis placed on interactions with the public. Serves as the liaison to the Program and Outreach Department including, but not limited to: leading storytime, assisting with school visits, bookmobile outreach, and assisting with system-wide special events. This position is non-exempt under the guidelines of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Duties and Responsibilities Essential Duties:
Establishes and maintains community collaborations and partnerships. Acts as liaison to various community stakeholders and organizations.
Assists the Old Fort Branch Manager by helping them oversee the maintenance of assigned library building by reporting issues to the county, bringing problems to the attention of maintenance staff, and contacting the appropriate authorities when emergencies arise. Keeps the Old Fort Branch Manager informed of issues and solutions.
Provides information services, including research assistance and readers advisory.
Assists the Old Fort Branch Manager by maintaining the branch collection, which includes identifying gaps, making suggestions for purchase, and weeding. Selects new materials in an assigned area for the library system. Responds to complaints and problems that may arise in library.
Markets and promotes the library and its services to the public.
Conducts and/or participates in various meetings and conferences, as requested and/or assigned, to share and acquire best practices, keep informed on key issues, and to bring forward ideas for new services and programs.
Serves as the liaison for the Program and Outreach Department.
Works together with the Old Fort Branch Manager and Program and Outreach Department to develop and lead programming for children, teens, and adults.
Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
Additional examples of duties:
Computer check-in and check-out of books and other materials.
Answers telephone promptly while on desk duty.
Empties book drops daily as assigned.
Performs library opening and closing procedures when needed.
Reserves books as requested by patron, and calls patrons when books are available.
Prepares daily newspapers and periodicals for shelving as assigned.
Prepares library cards for patrons following library procedures.
Is familiar with complaint procedures; documents and handles initial problems; refers these to the Library Manager or Library Director if necessary.
Shelves materials and reads shelves for accuracy as assigned.
Serves as the Old Fort Branch supervisor on duty in the absence of the branch manager.
Performs other tasks as assigned.
​Minimum Requirements
Strong written and oral communication and customer relations skills.
Familiarity with library procedures and materials.
Ability to deal tactfully with the public and with co-workers
Ability to work independently.
Ability to bend, stoop, lift book bags, push loaded book cart.
Computer knowledge and skills, including Internet and word processing.
Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Desirable Training and Experience
Public library experience.
Experience planning and leading programs for children, teens, and adults.
College education desirable, high school required.
